"Wired Canvas" involves translating weaving wire into a 3-dimensional format. My knowledge of basketry, experience as a weaver, and my interest in minimal and abstract art play a part in this study. Working with spools of wire, as opposed to cones of textile thread, I create abstract wire assemblages. Wire advances and recedes to create its own movement on or inside the limits of the canvas. Each canvas conveys a certain sense of time - they "record" the tedious, repetitive, almost mechanical layering of wire that went into building their surfaces. I offer the viewer a glimpse of this process, frozen in time on canvas, for consideration. |
